Holistic Pregnancy, Birth & Postpartum Doula:
“The moment a child is born, the mother is also born. She never existed before. The woman existed but the mother, never. A mother is something absolutely new”. Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh
The word ‘Doula’ originates from Greece and translates to ‘woman’s servant’. In the past, mothers were attended to at their births by the women in their family and perhaps the tribe ‘midwife’. These ‘wise’, experienced women nurtured the expectant/birthing mother with love so that she felt safe and empowered to transition into motherhood.
The modern day Doula provides mental, emotional and physical support at this amazing time in a woman’s life.
The role of the Doula takes on many forms, depending on the needs of the mother and father. At Holding Space for Souls we recognize this and tailor our packages in consultation with our clients.
My life experience (3 children, 5 grandchildren), formal study (Australian Doula College, BSc Psychology, End of Life Doula) have provided me with the ability to connect to mothers new and experienced, both compassionately and on a more practical level. I have a huge heart and an unwavering desire to help ensure that the birthing experience is as sacred and as special as possible.
Doula sessions typically span early pregnancy through to birth preferences planning, birth and beyond to the often forgotten fourth trimester. Postpartum planning and care is an area that our Western cultures regularly neglect and Postnatal Depression (which can affect dad as well as mum) is on the increase. Our support extends to the whole family and can incorporate services that range from literately holding the bubba whilst mumma takes a long bath to individual counselling sessions.
Referrals to supporting modalities can be arranged.
Initial 30 minute consultation is complimentary.
Packages are available to suit the individual needs of the mother.
Packages can include pre and post birth consultations, birth planning, postpartum care and counselling. Any of the doula services offered can be purchased singularly.
At Holding Space for Souls we offer Blessingway ceremonies for the new mother. The Blessingway is an old Navajo (Native American Indian) ceremony that honours the divine feminine as nurturer and it is a ceremony filled with honour and gratitude for the mother. It celebrates a woman’s transition into motherhood. The Navajo have a saying ‘Whatever happens here on earth must first be dreamed’, and creating the ‘Dream’ is the aim of our Blessingways. It is the ceremony or ‘dream’ that is a prelude to a major life event, one of intense personal growth where not only a child is born but a mother too. For subsequent children, the mother is considered to be expanding in wisdom.
The Blessingway creates a beautiful nurturing space where women gather in circle around the mother and honour her. It is a wonderful opportunity for the mother to surround herself with inspirational and loving women (her elders – chronological or experiential) who will empower her and give her confidence in herself, her divine powers and intuitive wisdom as she makes the journey toward childbirth and becoming a mother.
The Blessingway is a ‘template’ for the birth, with the distinct phases of childbirth being represented by sessions with the Blessingway ceremony. The circle represents a safe space for labour to commence, this is followed by a gentle early stage labour session, an active labour session, the intense emotion of the moment of birth, the delivering of the placenta and finally the postpartum period. Blessingways can also be tailored to the requirements of the mother.
